low GFR and bacirial infection

Question
Hi, Recently I had a blood test that showed a marked decline in GFR from 84 to 39. My doctor took a urine specimen. this showed no protein but found a Streptococcus agalactiae (group B) infection. Could this infection cause the change in GFR and is kidney function likely to improve once infection is treated? (I did have UTI symptoms including frequency, slight burning and possible fevers that i put down to menopausal symptoms (I am 48)).

Answer
Hi Liz,

Thanks for your question on "Allexperts".

Very severe infection of the kidneys, known as Pyelonephritis, can cause a transient drop in GFR. However, the patient would be extremely sick with high grade fever, flank pain, nausea, vomiting and decreased urine output.

A careful history, physical examination, lab tests and imaging of the urinary tract are required to diagnose your condition. Unfortunately, I am unable to do that over the internet.

Please ask your doctor to refer you to a Nephrologist.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
