Question
QUESTION: Dear Doctor,
From May to October, I was having a pain in my testicles, for which I went to different doctors and took 7 different courses of antibiotics. Now, I am experiencing extremely foamy urine. Could it be that the antibiotics have damaged my kidney forever, causing proteinuria? Please help me Im very scared.
Can antibiotics (which have been prescribed by doctors) do this- damage the kidney permanently?
ANSWER: Hi Nadir,
Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".
I have not heard of antibiotics causing proteinuria. Foamy urine does not always mean proteinuria. Please get your urine evaluated for the presence of albumin.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shah

QUESTION: Dear doctor,
Thank you so much for your response? You said that antibiotics do not cause proteinuria. But can they damage the kidney resulting in proteinuria?
I reiterate that I was put on several different antibiotics and pain killers ( though all by qualified medical professionals)
Earlier, last to last month, I did get my urine checked. The result was -
SPG- 1.0005
Protein- Nil
Ketones- Nil
Culture was also normal
I didnt show myself to the doctor as the result was normal, and didnt tell him about foamy urine.
I should also add that I have a constant urge to urinate.
Do you think my condition is serious? I am only 20 years old.
Regards,
Nadir
Answer
Hi Nadir,
Thanks for following up with me.
Your urinalysis clearly shows that you have no protein in your urine. The low specific gravity shows a dilute urine which may be due to increased water intake. That can also explain your frequent urge to urinate.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shah
