Foamy Urine

Question
QUESTION: Dear doctor, I a 20 year old male  and I have been experiencing consistently foamy urine for 2 months now. 6 months back, I had a urine analysis done, and the result was- protein- trace specific gravity- 1.0030. At that time my urine did not foam. Then 2 months back I started noticing that it foams a lot. When I put it in a bottle and shake it, it foams like soda. 2 months back I had another urine analysis, and the result was - specific gravity- 1.0005, protein- nil. Since protein was nil, I did not go to the doctor. The foamy urine is still persisting. Is it something to worry about?

ANSWER: Hi Hari,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

Please ask your doctor to order a 24 hour urinary albumin estimation. If the result is within normal limits, you have nothing to worry about.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah

QUESTION: Dear Doctor,

I will not be able to go to a doctor for 2 months because of exams.

1. Based on the above information, do you think its a case of proteinuria?

2. I am really worried because of the foamy urine as I never had it before. I took different courses of antibiotics from doctors for an inflammatory infection I had. Do you think that could be the cause of foamy urine?

3. Does foamy urine always mean something serious. Base on the information, do you think that its proteinuria in my case? I have no nighttime urination or edema.

Answer
Hi Hari,

Thanks for following up with me. Now, the answers:

1. Proteinuria can present as foamy urine.

2. I have not heard of antibiotics causing foamy urine.

3. No. I cannot venture to say if you have proteinuria or not just based on the information that you have provided.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
