Low GFR

Question
Dr Shah,

My low GFR was discovered while going in to get a neck MRI two months ago. It was 40. I am a 55 year old white female, about 30 pounds overweight. I've been having low abdominal and left side back pain for about a month and was told I had a rectocele that was causing my pain. All my lab work has come back normal. My creatinine is 1.03. No protein and nothing else abnormal. My doctor did put me on Hydrochlorothyazide for a year due to slightly elevated blood pressure (I am also on lopressor 50mg) but my blood pressure is under control. She took me off of the HCTZ last month and she said that the low GFR is a result of being on the HCTZ. Should I be concerned and request an appointment with a nephrologist?

Thank you!!

Answer
Hi Cynthia,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

I have not heard of HCTZ causing a fall in GFR. However, an eGFR must always be seen in light of a suggestive history and physical examination findings. If you do not have symptoms of kidney disease, I'd not be worried too much.

Just make sure you are in regular follow up with your primary care physician.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
