Previous Gross Hematuria, Now Protein in Urine

Question
What is a "high" amount of mg's of protein found in urine. Just did a urine cytology and it came back negative for bladder cancer and/or inflamation of bladder tissue, but had 30 mgs of protein.  Nurse is having dr call me, but thinks he will have me do a 24 hour urine test.  (I had gross hematuria before Christmas for about 10-11 days and now its gone). Experiencing some dull lower back pains.  What do you think the 30 mg's signifies? (31 yr old female)

Answer
Hi Ang,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

A single reading of 30 mg is very difficult to interpret. If I were your doctor, I'd also order a 24 hour urinary protein estimation before jumping to any conclusions.

Please do not hesitate to follow up with me after your result is available.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
