Question
Hey,
I am 20 and have had renal problems since birth. I went into renal failure back in 2001 and spent 6 months on peritoneal dialysis before receiving a successful kidney transplant in may 2002. I am on anti rejection tablets since as you properly no. My question is, is it possible for me to have children and how fertile could i be as a result of these drugs?
Answer
Hi John,
Transplantation restores the balance in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and consequently is associated with improvements in sperm motility but not in sperm counts or morphology. Calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) and azathioprine do not seem to alter male fertility after transplantation.
The best way to know is to get your semen examined by a qualified laboratory and discussing with your doctor.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shah
