should I be concerned?

Question
Hi Dr. Shah. I had routine blood work done for pre-op surgery next week. I was comparing them to my previous blood work from 5/08 and noticed my Creatine, Serum is high and my eGFR is low. My recent test from 11/24/09 shows Creatine, Serum is 1.03 mg/DL (normal range 0.57-1.00 and my eFGR is 57 mL/min/1.73 (normal range >59). My results for the Glom filt rate from 5/08 was 54 lL/min (normal range 60-128). Creatine, serum was 1.08 mg/dL (normal range 0.50-1.50 (they've changed the normal ranges so it was considered within range at the time??). I am a healthy 49 year-old white female. My doctor has not mentioned the results of this test or the test from 5/08. Is this something I should be concerned with and question, or pursue with a specialist? I eat clean, work out at the gym 3-4 days a week, don't drink, however I smoke approximately 6 cigarettes a day. Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Joyce,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

Please ask your primary care physician order a 24 hour urinary creatinine clearance for you. eGFR results are not always very accurate. If the result is normal, you have nothing to worry about. If not, you need to see a kidney specialist.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
