Stant plasement

Question
MY son was born with one kidney. he is 23 year old.befor 10 days ago we realized that he has 2 3-4 mm kidney stones in his uretra. They put in his uretra stent, and prescripted CIPROFLOXACIN and FLOMAX and send home until the infection wil gone. After 43 days he got fever, runing nose, the 6th day he got rush. The doctor changed his antibiotik to CEPHALEXIN. NOw his fever and rush almost gone. But he stil has the infection. His urine is red and cloudy. My question is: How long could be the infection, and when is the  time to remove the stones and the stent? is that dangerious for person with kidney?

Thank you.

I.G.

Answer
Hi Iliana,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

The ureteric stent acts as a conduit for micro-organisms that can cause infection. The usual practice is to remove/change the stent within 3 weeks of placement.

Did his doctor order a urine culture before changing the antibiotic? An infection of the kidney usually requires two weeks of antibiotic therapy to clear.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
