Question
I had gastric bypass back in 2004 and my kidneys stopped working for a short time after that. 5 years later my kidney function still has not returned to normal. I was wondering was the drug benicar harmful to take since I have had renal failure and would it damage my kidneys even more. My doctor said I should take it to protect my kidneys from further damage, Is this a good drug to take to help with kidney maintenance to stop my kidneys from being damaged further???
Answer
Hi Ralph,
Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".
Benicar (Olmesartan) usually helps prevent the progression of kidney dysfunction in patients who have chronic kidney disease. However, it can be harmful in patients who have an elevated creatinine or potassium level.
It is important to know what is the cause of your kidney dysfunction. Was a kidney biopsy done? Are your kidneys normal sized on ultrasound? Do you have proteinuria?
Sincerely,
Dr. Shah
