S/P Nephrectomy

Question
Hello, Dr Shah:

I am 36 years old female and approx. three weeks status post right radical nephrectomy. I feel relatively normal, except for frequent & severe cramps in my feet and calves, as well as my hands - I mean the kind of cramps that make you cry out in pain, and I am unable to move/release the muscle until the cramp releases. Aside from muscle pain, I simply feel....well, odd mentally. I have alot of trouble focusing and concentrating, problems with memory. I also have visual disturbances - symptoms similar to ophthalmic migraine with the waves and distorted vision, as well as "seeing things." I constantly am doing "double takes," thinking I see someone or something in my peripheral vision, jerk my head up/around to look and nobody/nothing is there. It's very disconcerting, to say the least.

Bloodwork at two weeks post-op reveal normal labs except for a low GFR: CREATININE 1.25, BUN 14, POTASSIUM 4.2, SODIUM 138, CALCIUM 9.4, EGFR 48.

As that I am still freshly post-op, am I just expecting to much of my body just yet? I'm sincerely hoping this is a symptom of my body chemistry re-adjusting to one kidney. I've had plenty of preop testing to make sure my remaining kidney can handle the job, therefore, should I be worried?

Thank you...

Answer
Hi Laura,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

It will take some time for your body to adjust after the major surgery. However, it will be wise to check your calcium and magnesium levels.

Please do not hesitate to follow up with me with the results.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
