Question
QUESTION: I have had a right sided dull flank pain for about 3 months now. I saw a specialist who performed a CT scan of the right kidney area. The CT was negative. My pain is constant, and I am really uncomfortable. It is interfering with my work and my everyday life. What should I do and what test or direction should I go in next?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Lawrence
ANSWER: Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for your question on "Allexperts".
A careful history, physical examination, lab tests and a review of your CT scan are required to diagnose your condition. Unfortunately, I am unable to do so over the internet.
Please discuss these issues with your doctor or ask for another opinion.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shah

QUESTION: Dr. Shah
That is the problem. My medical hx. is negative. No hx. of any medical problems or surgical procedures. There is no personal or family hx. of anything but some mild cardiovascular issues on my maternal side. The physical exam performed by physician was negative with the exception of the noted right sided flank pain. As for lab tests, a UA was performed and was negative along with no proteins or traces of any blood. I realize without seeing the CT you can not give your opinion on the CT, but just for reference, it was checked by not only a kidney specialist, but also a radiologist at the hospital. They both agreed in opinion that it was negative. I am just so confused as to what steps I should pursue next. I wish someone would just say it could be whatever, and rule it out. I do not even have a clue as to what it could or could not be. Could you tell me what in your opinion is the next step in figuring out where this dull right sided flank pain is coming from.
Thank you so much for taking your time to read and assist me in figuring this all out.
Answer
Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for following up with me.
There are a number of differential diagnoses for flank pain. A discussion of all these conditions is beyond the scope of this forum. Only a careful physical exam helps a doctor narrow down the possibilities.
Sorry I am unable to help you further.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shah
