Kidney Transplant

Question
I had a kidney transplant 02/17/2009. Back in 07 I went to the doctor and he ran some test on my ejaculation and found no sperm, so my question is, now that I have another kidney and it is working very well, is there a chance for me to have sperm now??

Answer
Hi Dee,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

Most adult patients with normal kidney function after transplant have an improvement in sperm count and motility.

It is important to know your age and the onset of renal failure. Semen variables are severely affected and spermatogenesis does not improve after renal transplantation when patients are subjected to uremia before or during adolescence, the crucial period for spermatogenesis.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
