Question
Creatinine is 1.23, eGFR is 48, 49 yo white female, symptoms: hiccups, itching, fatigue, aversion to meat, bad taste in mouth, blurry vision, getting up every night to urinate, loss of appetite, SOB, chills. What's the possibility of me having CKD? I have an appointment with a nephrologist next week - what questions should I ask, what should I expect at the appointment? Thanks for your input.
Answer
Hi Samantha,
Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".
A careful physical examination, review of other lab tests and imaging of the urinary tract are required to diagnose your condition. As I have said earlier on this forum, an eGFR reading must always be viewed in light of suggestive history and physical exam findings.
If I am in doubt, I order a 24-hour urinary creatinine clearance test for my patients.
I am sorry, I am not able to help you further at this point. Please do not hesitate to follow up with me if you have any doubts/concerns after your consultation. Good luck.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shah
